Most website copy is written to sound good. Very little is written to sell. The difference is not talent, it is structure. Copy that converts follows a simple pattern: it names the problem, offers the solution, and makes the next step obvious. The rest of this article is that pattern, in the order you should apply it.
Start with the headline
Your headline does most of the work. Visitors decide in seconds whether to stay, so the headline must say what you do and for whom. Not 'Welcome to our website' but 'Same-day laptop repair in Colombo'. A good headline is specific, because specifics are believable. If your headline could belong to any business, rewrite it until it cannot. The cost of a vague headline is every visitor who leaves in the first five seconds.
Lead with benefits
Features describe what you have. Benefits describe what the customer gains. 'Responsive design' is a feature. 'A site that works on any phone' is a benefit, and it matters more to a customer. Write every page by asking: so what? Keep asking until the answer is about the customer's result, not your process. Features support the sale, but benefits close it.
Make it scannable
Nobody reads a website. They scan it. Short paragraphs, clear headings, and bold key lines let a visitor find what matters in seconds. Put the most important line first in every section. Break up long explanations with a subheading. If a page looks like a wall of text, most visitors will leave before they reach your contact form, no matter how good the words are.
Write for the person, not the company
Weak copy talks about the business: 'We are a leading agency'. Strong copy talks about the customer: 'Your site should earn you leads'. Swap every 'we' for a 'you' where you can. The page should feel like a conversation with the visitor, not a brochure about yourself. Customers care about their problem, and they will only read about you once they believe you understand it.
Place your calls to action
A call to action is only useful if it is obvious. Put one near the top, one after the main sections, and one at the end. Use clear words: 'Call us', 'Get a quote', 'Book a consultation'. Avoid vague labels like 'submit' or 'click here'. The best CTA tells the visitor exactly what happens next, with no guesswork.
Remove the friction
Every doubt a visitor has is friction. Answer the obvious questions before they are asked: How much? How long? Do you serve my area? A small FAQ section can remove the last objection. Trust details, like a phone number on every page, do the same. The fewer reasons to hesitate, the more people contact you, because hesitation is where most sales quietly die.
Test and improve
Good copy is rewritten, not written. Read your page aloud, cut every unnecessary word, and ask a customer what they would do next. Then watch your analytics: which pages earn calls, and which lose visitors. Copy that converts is a process, not a one-time task, and the best page is the one you have revised three times.
A note on language
For Sri Lankan businesses, language matters. Many customers are more comfortable in Sinhala or Tamil, and a page in their language earns more trust than a perfect English page they barely understand. If your market is local, consider bilingual pages, or at least a clear phone number and a simple greeting in the customer's language. Clarity beats polish every time.
The one-sentence test
Try the one-sentence test on any page. Summarize the page in a single sentence, from the visitor's point of view. If you cannot, the page has no clear purpose, and no purpose means no conversion. Rewrite the page until that sentence is obvious to a stranger. Every strong page passes this test in under ten seconds, and every weak one quietly fails it.
