Tesla's electric heavy duty truck has finally moved into high volume manufacturing. This is a factory and production story rather than a flashy vehicle launch.

A Dedicated Factory in Nevada

Tesla held a Semi Rollout event on September 24, 2026, to officially inaugurate a new, dedicated Tesla Semi factory in Sparks, Nevada, located next to Tesla's existing Gigafactory Nevada site. The factory is roughly 1.7 million square feet, and the event marked the formal start of high volume Semi production, not just a one off prototype plant. Tesla targets a capacity of up to 50,000 trucks per year.

Nine Years in the Making

It is worth noting the timing honestly. This comes almost nine years after Musk first unveiled the Tesla Semi concept in 2017, which underlines how long the truck took to reach real, high volume manufacturing. That delay is a fair and accurate point, not a criticism to avoid.

Engineering Updates

Tesla reported several engineering updates around this time, including a central thermal management system, a more robust electric drive unit, and 48 volt electric power steering. These are described as improvements aimed at lowering cost and improving reliability.

Beyond the US

A European version of the Tesla Semi is in development, which is a notable expansion beyond the US market. Tesla has said it will run every variant, Standard, Long Range and the European spec, on the same production line.

A new factory is a long term commitment to doing the work properly, and building a website that lasts takes the same kind of commitment.
